Nurse-led care, planned around you
Respite Care
Family carers sometimes need time to rest, attend appointments or manage other commitments. Respite care provides temporary support for the person they care for, with attention to familiar routines and preferences.
When might respite care help?
Respite care offers temporary support for someone who is usually helped by a family member or another regular carer. It can give that carer time to rest, attend appointments or manage other commitments. The length and timing are planned around the person's assessed needs and the support available.
Temporary support shaped around you
Depending on the agreed plan, respite visits may include:
Personal care
Support with washing, dressing and everyday routines, following the person's preferences and care plan.
Meals and hydration
Help with agreed meal preparation and prompts to eat or drink, in keeping with familiar routines.
Companionship
Conversation and reassurance while a regular carer is away, with activities guided by the person's interests.
Mobility and outings
Support with movement or agreed local activities when these have been assessed and fit within the planned visit.
Medication support
Prompting or assistance only where assessed and recorded in the care plan and medication instructions.
A clear handover
Relevant routines, preferences, contacts and safety information can be discussed with the person and their authorised representative.
All support is subject to assessment, the agreed care plan and our carers' training and competence. Additional activities must fit safely within the agreed visit time without displacing essential care.
Keeping support familiar
The person's usual routine
We ask what a typical day looks like and which routines help the person feel comfortable, so temporary support can follow the agreed plan.
A planned handover
We discuss the information carers need to provide the agreed support, including who to contact if a concern arises.
Support for family carers
We discuss the dates, tasks and arrangements that may help the regular carer take a planned break, without assuming a particular duration or schedule.
Planning temporary care
Tell us when support is needed
Share the dates or period being considered, the usual care arrangement and the tasks that need cover.
Assess the person's needs
We discuss preferences, routines, relevant risks and whether the requested support is suitable for our service.
Agree dates and a handover
We confirm availability, the visit schedule and scope of support, then agree the care plan and contact arrangements before visits begin.
Keep the plan up to date
If dates or needs change, contact us as soon as possible so we can discuss the arrangements and available options.
Handover, records and updates
Carers record each visit and relevant observations or concerns. We agree how to contact the regular carer or representative, subject to the person's wishes and consent. If a need arises that is outside the agreed plan, the carer follows the reporting procedure and seeks guidance rather than changing the care package independently.

Can respite care be arranged for a short period?
We can discuss one-off or short-term support. The dates, schedule and length depend on the person's assessed needs, staffing availability and an agreed care plan.
Can respite care cover all of someone's usual support?
We first discuss the person's needs and the regular arrangement. We confirm which tasks and visits we can safely provide; we cannot assume that every part of an existing package can be covered.
What information should we share before respite visits?
A useful handover includes the person's routines and preferences, agreed support tasks, relevant risks, medication arrangements where applicable, and the contacts to use if a concern arises. We only request information needed to plan safe care.
Can support include medication?
Only if the required support has been assessed and agreed in the care plan and medication records, and is within the assigned carer's training and competence.
Can respite visits include an outing?
An outing can be discussed during assessment. It must be agreed in the care plan, suitable for the person's needs and risks, and possible within the planned visit.
How much does respite care cost?
Charges depend on the agreed tasks, visit schedule and duration. We discuss the proposed costs before confirming the arrangement.
How soon should we enquire?
Contact us as early as you can with the dates and type of support needed. We will discuss assessment and availability; a particular date cannot be guaranteed until confirmed.
